Everyone likes to give their pets treats sometimes, but what treats can you feed a betta fish?

Betta fish, or Siamese fighting fish, are some of the most beautiful fish you can have.

Their colorful fins and tails will have you mesmerized.

They are fun fish to have as pets.

Our pets are like family, and we like to treat them as such.

So when it comes to their health, we should always make sure we know what’s best for them.

So what can you feed a betta fish?

Betta fish are typically carnivorous, meaning they need a high protein diet. The protein they need will only be found in meat sources.

In a betta native habitat they will eat insect larvae, blood worms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and almost any meat source they can fit in their mouths.

If you own betta, you probably know that you can buy these kinds of things at most pet or fish stores. You can also feed bettas pellets or flake food.

Most people just stick to pellets so they know the dietary requirements of their little fish friends are being met.

So what about treats?

Although it may be tempting to feed your betta what you are eating, it may not be in their best interest.

Bread and bettas do not mix.

Have you ever eaten a carb-filled meal and felt super bloated? Well, the same thing happens with bettas, except they don’t handle it well.

The bread can swell up in their digestive tract and cause severe bloating, constipation, and death. Although a small piece of unsalted cracker may be OK every once in a while, it is not recommended.

If you really want to change up your betta’s diet, you can occasionally feed small pieces of vegetables. Specifically, a boiled pea (but be sure to remove the skin as it does not digest well), cucumber, lettuce and maybe even microwaved or boiled spinach.

Also make sure there are no seasonings on these treats.

Some people may also feed small quantities of chicken, beef, and pork. However, the meat needs to be completely boiled through, and no seasonings.

It’s not typical for a water creature to eat a land creature, but there technically isn’t any harm. Some people may also try to feed their bettas tuna, which is OK as long as it is packed in water.

Tuna packed in oil has a high fat content which is not good for your fish (or for your fish tank).

You also want to avoid overfeeding your betta.

Overfeeding can result in a whole new bout of problems.

Typically, if your fish hasn’t eaten all the food you’ve given after two minutes, it’s better to take the leftovers out to stop them from snacking later.

Remember to keep your fish on a schedule as well.

Feeding twice a day (once every 12 hours) is usually the safest route.

So if you want your betta to live a happy, healthy life (even up to five years), stick to giving them high protein or pellets, avoid bread at all costs, and treat them to the occasional vegetable!
