Why Does Betta Fish Biting Their Fins/Tails?

Why do Betta fish bite their fins/tails? I’m sure most of us have encountered this situation at least once.

Why Do Betta Fish Bite Their FinsTails

Another thing to think about is that if a male Betta gets stressed over this problem, he may start to exhibit bad behavior like being aggressive towards other males and females or displaying more aggressive behavior.

Betta Bite Its Own Fins Due To Stress

betta bite its own fins because its stress

If you have a betta that is stressed, it will be very hard for it to recover and will instead resort to its normal behavior, namely biting its fins. It’s very important for you as the owner to know the cause of your betta biting its fins and how to get it back under control.

A very common reason why your butt is biting its fins is because it is stressed.

This is the same stress reaction that fish will react to when they are scared or threatened.

Stress in fish can be caused by too many changes such as: moving to another tank or changing the substrate, changing the food, changing the water temperature and the presence of too many fish in the tank.

  • A common misconception about stressed fish is that it is something they do because they are being “bored”, which is absolutely not true.
  • Stress in fish is caused by the sudden change of a substrate and will take your butt away from its natural habitat to an environment where it will need time to adapt to.
  • In some cases, the stress in the tank is caused by a bacterial infection and if this is the case then your vet will probably recommend a course of antibiotics.
  • Stress in fish can also be caused by eating toxic materials such as copper, which is used in making goldfish aquarium filtration systems.
  • Copper is toxic to most aquatic animals, but it is particularly toxic to bettas as they have a specialised liver which is able to metabolise copper in large amounts.
  • Your vet should be able to advise you if your betta needs help to relieve the stress or if you can provide it with the right diet or medication.

Why Betta Bites Its Own Fins Because of Boredom

Some people claim that this is part of their natural predatory behavior but it can also be caused by boredom.

  • Another cause for a better bite could be due to an injury. It is very common for betta’s to develop injuries as they are swimming and this can be especially common when they are young.
  • Betta fish can also suffer from stress from other fish in the tank.
  • Some aquariums will have specific fish who are responsible for the stress levels and if these fish are aggressive than other fish in the tank may feel the need to have a little competition.

  • Others think that it could be hunger, as it could also happen to other fish and there isn’t any difference in how bad it is for the fish.
  • This is an interesting idea, but I’m not really sure how to go about explaining to a pet store associate that this type of fish is only eating its own fins and tails.
  • This is not something that they really like to hear.
  • They don’t want to think that their fish has been eating its own fins.
  • It’s not fair to the betta.
  • If you are buying a fish, especially one like the best bite its own fins and tails type, don’t buy it.
  • Have they tested by a veterinarian or your local fish store.
  • If it is really the case that they have eaten all their fins and tails, then it may be necessary for you to put the fish to sleep until the problem can be solved.

However, if the problem is due to lack of water or food, or a combination of both, there should be no problem taking care of the problem.

  • They may also be living in very large aquariums where the water conditions may not be as clean as they would be if they lived in a smaller container.
  • In order to prevent this type of problem from developing, you should ensure that your aquarium is kept in a very clean environment which has clean, clear water that is free from all debris such as droppings and algae.
  • This is to ensure that they have good conditions for the development of bacteria to take effect.
  • You should also make sure that the water is clean enough that all the fish can breathe and move freely.

When you fish is kept in these conditions, they will definitely start to learn how to breathe.

When the bacteria starts to take effect, this will be able to help the fish to remove the toxins that are accumulated in their bodies.

There are many other factors that can cause the fish to develop the habit of biting its own fins and if they are not dealt with, they can result in the death of the fish.

You should also give your fish a lot of food so that it will have the nutrition that it needs to grow as big as it can.

Avoid Betta Tail Biting – What You Can Do to Stop Your Pet From Eating Other Fish

It’s a sad but true fact that there are thousands of people around the world who have an infestation of the horrible and irritating betta tail biting fish.

It’s a sad truth, but one that many of us are only too happy to ignore.

avoid betta tail biting Attempt to move the tank to a new location

To avoid beta tail biting, it’s important to first try and remove as much of the fish out of the tank as possible.

You can do this with a net, or by physically removing the fish. Many people often decide to leave just a few finches in the tank, but the number one rule when it comes to keeping your pets safe is to not allow more than three to live in the same aquarium at one time.

Although this may seem like a lot of fish to keep in one tank, it can actually be an unnecessary amount of work.

Most importantly, you will be able to avoid being bitten by biting fish in the future.

Once you’ve removed the fish from the tank, you should then check if there are any other inhabitants in the tank.

Most importantly, make sure that none of these fish are eating the other ones.

Betta tail biting is a natural part of the fish’s life cycle and will not occur if these fish are kept in separate tanks.

Once all of the fish are in the tank, you should now set up a substrate that contains the right nutrients.

It’s important to remember that even though the betta tail biting fish are eating the other fish, it does not mean that the other fish aren’t still feeding off of them.

This will eventually cause an imbalance that is difficult to reverse, so by ensuring that your tank has the correct nutrition and is not overly full of food, you’ll be able to prevent the situation from becoming an issue again in the near future.

Avoiding Betta Tail Biting Due to Lighting in the Tank

For the lighting in the tank, keep it at a reasonable level, but not too bright for the Betta.

Bright lights could frighten them and cause them to bite more often.

You could use low wattage light in a tank where there are no live plants in the tank so the fish don’t have any place to hide.

One thing to remember is that the lights in the tank must be placed near the heater to avoid overheating the fish.

If you have fish tanks that are located above your head, it is a good idea to put a fluorescent light on the tank.

As a betta is extremely active and loves to play in small areas, it would be quite suitable for them to be in a smaller tank with just a little substrate.

However, if you are planning on breeding your Betta, you would need to keep the tank at a bigger size.

Betta tail biting may not be a problem in such an environment, but a smaller tank could be just enough for the fish to enjoy the environment.

You can also choose to keep your Betta in another tank where there are no other fish to tempt it into biting.

The smaller stones may need to be replaced after a while as they become worn out and the fish can get tangled in the fibers of the stones and suffocate if they are too large.

What is the Best Betta Fish Natural Habitat For Maintenance?

betta fish natural habitat substrate consists muddy silt layers vegetation

It is often said that betta fish cannot survive in polluted water and that they will perish unless they are given a good, quality aquarium or betta fish natural habitat substrate.

However the facts are completely different. This is because the type of substrate you use for your betta fish tank will have a very big bearing on their health and lifespan.

There are some types of substrate which are ideal for the aquatic environment of bettas, but some betta fish cannot live or survive on such substrates and need to be changed every few months.

There are some other betta fish species which actually can survive on such substrates and are quite happy living on them for prolonged periods of time. One of the most well known of these species is the Betta Fish in Asia.

  • Betta Fish can tolerate a good degree of pollution in their tank, but there are specific substrates which they cannot survive on.
  • These substrates include anything that contains a lot of dead algae, which is one of the main causes of toxic ammonia levels in a betta fish tank.
  • This in turn causes harmful bloating and vomiting in your fish, but also can cause death in some cases.
  • This is why it is vital that you change all of the substrate and gravel every few months as this has a major effect on the health and longevity of your betta fish.
  • The reason for changing the substrate and gravel is because of the fact that they contain so much algae and dead plant matter which must be removed and replaced with fresh soil.

A substrate which is made up of a combination of various substrate materials such as wood, pebbles and gravel is perfect for the Betta Fish as this will provide it with the ideal living conditions and will keep harmful algae at bay, which is a breeding ground for toxic ammonia.

It is best to mix your substrate with the same ratio of dead plant material and dead algae that is used by the majority of fish kept in aquariums. This is the natural habitat substrate on Betta Fish in the Wild.

This makes it easier for your fish to metabolise the nutrients in the new mixture and helps the fish to retain their health and vitality better.

However, if you wish to increase the amount of nutrients that your betta fish get to keep the levels of toxic algae at bay then you should also use the right amount of food in your aquarium.

Do Betta Fish Need a Filter?

Do Betta Fish Need a Filter?

do betta fish need a filter

Do betta fish need a filter? As with all things, not all fish need a filter in the same way. Some fish can live for years without having a filter and will still live happily. The larger the fish the more likely they are to use a filter and it would not be an issue for them to maintain it.

Once you get past the size issue, if the fish were capable of cleaning themselves naturally, they would not need a filter. However, it is important to understand that the ammonia in the water will kill your fish if they get the chance. If you feed them high quality food you will only be adding to their tank and this can lead to serious problems if you are not careful.

Once again a filter can be beneficial as long as you have the right equipment and you have a good care plan in place for your fish.

Do betta fish need a filter? In my opinion the answer is no and it is not wise to have a filter in your fish tank if they do not need one.

If you have had little or no success with bacteria/nitrogen, nitrate or other filtering devices, why risk the health of your fish.

A filter does work, but if you have a population of betta fish and you keep using the same methods on the same aquariums and they are getting sick, you may want to think about replacing them with another species.

The first step is to cut down the space from the aquarium that you can build your pond in. The next step is to collect the stones that are present in the water and leave them in the open space.

You can add the plants that are growing in the natural layer.

After you have done this, you can also place the rocks near the tank to improve the quality of the water and filter the water with the filter media.

Now you can start to create the water.

All the animals living in the water of the tank will be harmed. In order to protect them, you can add some other fish to the tank. They will eat the food that is left at the bottom of the water.

Is Your Bettas Filter Too Strong? Discover How to Use Antibacterial Disinfectants to Improve Your Water Quality

In order to make sure that your water is clean, you need to make sure that your Bettas filter is strong enough to withstand the strong cleaning agents that are available.

It’s no secret that the powerful chemical agents used in a conventional household filtration system can lead to problems for your fish.

A polluted water source can lead to harmful, sometimes fatal side effects for your pets.

A healthier water source can help your fish live a longer and healthier life. Let’s talk about some of the best ways to keep your Betta’s filter strong and effective at cleaning all the impurities out of your water.

Is Your Bettas Filter Too Strong

First of all, avoid using antibacterial disinfectants and chlorine on your water. These chemicals are harsh on your Bettas filter and can eventually damage the thin membrane.

So instead of using these toxic chemicals, you should try to use distilled water instead.

While this won’t be as powerful as tap water, it will still provide the right balance of natural minerals and will still be very helpful in cleaning your water.

The next step is to pay attention to how much cleaning agent you are using on your water. Too much can actually weaken your filter, which can actually make it worse than it already is.

Another thing you can do to improve the life of your water and improve the overall health of your fish is to try to keep your water as clean as possible by cleaning it at least twice a week.

This way, the bacteria build-up will be kept to a minimum. With this, your Bettas filter will not only be more effective at cleaning your water but will also be able to keep up with all the excess chemicals that you are using on your water.

You can even combine this with another method and use a reverse osmosis system. This system uses a high pressure method to effectively remove impurities from your water.

So instead of just turning it on once a week, you can now turn it on at least three times a week to remove all the pollutants from your water.

Just keep in mind that a lot of people are using reverse osmosis systems as their main filtration system to clean their water.

Choosing the Best Betta Filters For Your Fish Tank

Recommended Betta Filters

Now that you have chosen the fish, the next thing you need to do is decide on what type of filter you want to use to keep your fish in your tank.

There are various types of filters available in the market. However, what is important here is to choose the type of filter that you can use to keep your water clean and healthy.

When choosing the filter, be sure to use one that is able to remove and eliminate the biggest amount of ammonia from your tank.

You also need to choose the filter that is able to eliminate most of the chemicals present in your fish’s environment.

Another thing that you need to know about the Betta filters is that they must be able to clean and sterilize your Betta in the least amount of time.

This is important because bacteria and viruses can easily find their way into the filter and multiply rapidly. The bacteria can cause your Betta’s skin to fall off because it is very weak.

The filter must be able to cleanse your Betta’s environment quickly and effectively.

There are some types of Betta filters which you must be aware of. One of these is the sub-micron filtration system which will allow the water to go through the filter but the micron filtering system will block out any large particles that can be harmful to your Betta.

There are many different kinds of filters available in the market. What is important is to choose the one that will work best for your Betta. Do not forget to read the instruction manual so that you do not mess up the filter. There are also a lot of different ways in which you can clean your tank. These include using soap and water, using distilled water and boiling the water in a kettle.

Can Betta Fish Live Without a Filter?

Can betta fish live without a filter

The answer to this question is ‘no’.

However, the right environment can make it possible for the fish to live without a filter.

It can be very frustrating if you have ever had fish in the aquarium and have noticed that they have stopped eating because of pollution. You can try all kinds of things to encourage them to eat again.

A good quality food (such as live food) can solve this problem. Fish are very adaptable and can usually live with virtually any kind of food they choose. It all depends on how strong the appetite is and the type of food your fish prefers.

Fish can also be damaged by pollution. Most aquarists will tell you that filter cleaning is essential and that it should not be done too often.

However, if you have fish that seem to be sensitive to pollution, regular cleanings will be very helpful. If your fish is stressed, then keeping the water at an alkaline pH level can help them recover.

While it may seem strange, you can use a foil packet or a dill packet when you are feeding your betta fish. This is used to entice them to eat. You will be surprised at the amount of waste you can reduce by feeding fish this food instead of a liquid diet.

Do Bettas Really Need a Filter?

Do Bettas really need a filter

Well, let’s talk about the above question. Do Bettas really need a filter to drink water? Well, not every fish have to filter their water. Some fish will drink from a pot and others will use a specially made filtration device.

So, does that mean that your betta can just drink from a sink or dish?

No, because some of the filter would need to go into the tank in order to maintain the filtration level of the water.

However, some owners are still using the same old water bottles, or some people even just leave it to the filter, which would be fine, but not as efficient.

Now, if you are asking if a filter is needed, the answer is yes, but it depends on what kind of filter you are using. If you are using the same old bottle, or one of those fancy aquarium water filters that just provide good quality water for your fish, then there is no need for a filter.

But, if you are using the same type of filter, but using a different kind of bottle, then you are required to get a filter for the betta.

Since a lot of bacteria grow in the water and if the water inside the bottle is contaminated, the bacteria can spread inside the tank.

Also, the pet store, like Alaskan, have products that can help in preventing bacteria from entering the tank. But you still have to find the right water filtering system for your betta.

The betta is very delicate, so make sure that the filter has good functionality and if you will be getting a long term purchase for the tank, make sure that the filter is not too deep.

These are all tips on how to find out if your belt has a filter. Remember, there is no need for you to get a filter just for your betta.

Do Betta Fish Need a Light at Night?

You might be asking yourself, do betta fish need a light at night? Do they really need it at all? Believe it or not you don’t.

This is the way that most people think as well. That’s right, most of the best owners in the world will tell you that if you take the light off you fish you might just have to give them to the other fish.

Do betta fish need a light at night

In a normal aquarium most fish are kept very well and they only need little amounts of lighting, usually no more than 6 hours a day.

However this is not the case with bettas as it can be hard to get them to go out and move around.

They have highly evolved brains, so this makes it difficult for them to be able to move around easily. They are also very active, so are not a good source of light.

If you do need to do this for your betta and are concerned about the time involved, you need to understand that this is not just a mechanical issue.

There are quite a few factors involved in this.

The first and foremost one being the temperature of the tank. Temperatures can get quite high if the water in the tank is warm.

To avoid this and therefore reduce the amount of light needed, the tank should be kept a bit cooler and then you should put a good quality aquarium heater into the system.

Why Does My Betta Fish Like the Filter?

Why does my betta fish like the filter

There are many reasons why your betta fish likes the filter. One of the most popular of these is that the fish will feed better and have a better chance of survival.

They have not been subjected to a harsh environment, so they will be more tolerant to changes in water quality.

What is good for your fish is good for you.

Therefore it is always best to keep your betta fish healthy and happy as it is part of the natural balance of nature.

Of course, other aspects of your pet’s health are also important as they are integral parts of their lives. In order to maintain their good health, you should pay attention to the many tips provided below.

When your betta fish is used to the water and has been accustomed to a clean water, then he will make better use of the filter.

If you do not have filters for your betta fish, then it is important that you remove the algae from the aquarium. This will help you achieve a healthier environment and prevent your betta fish from getting sick.

While removing the algae, there are some things that you can do. The first thing you can do is turn off the pump in the aquarium, as well as the heater. The water in the tank will no longer have any oxygen and this is the main reason why your betta fishes like the filter.

Besides, by having the filter, you can have a healthier environment. This is because the filter will remove the ammonia and other contaminants from the water.

These contaminants will make your betta fish to become ill. That is why it is important that you keep them happy and healthy by changing the water regularly.

The Only True Way to Get Your Betta to Breed

do betta fish need oxygen pump

The only true way to get your betta to breed is to have a water filter in your tank. I’m sure you’ve heard of such devices as the nitrifying bacteria, filter, or oxygenator. It’s basically something that keeps your water clear and free of particulates or impurities. The thing is, these are not necessary to be successful with bettas.

In fact, most bettas can be treated with minimal maintenance for breeding. You have to know how to select the best water filters for your betta if you want to get the results you want.

The following information will help you decide which filter you should use in your betta tank.

There are three different kinds of filters to choose from. They are pH control, reverse osmosis, and activated carbon.

Each has its benefits, but in terms of performance the most important is reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis filters, because they remove large particulates, the environment will be cleaner than any other type of filter.

A large amount of the particulates will simply pass through the filter in order to keep the water clean.

The beneficial microorganisms will be able to thrive in this type of water.

Now that you know how to find the perfect water filter for your betta, you have to remember to put in an oxygenator or nitrifying bacteria.

The main purpose of these is to allow the best to breed more often. The more times you see it breed, the more he will produce. What do bettas need, is healthy water that will produce offspring. Once you get a healthy betta population, you can enjoy a long term betta fish tank hobby. Once you understand the process, it will be easy to monitor your betta’s health.

Does Betta Fish Needing a Bubbler?

do betta fish need a bubbler

If you own a small tank and are looking for a good way to keep your fish happy, a Bubbler is one of the best options available to you.

Bubblers work by giving the water that has been filtered and cycled a bubble like form that then keeps the water fresh and warm at all times.

The bubbles are placed in the aquarium so that the fish can swim through them. This works best with live rock as the bubbles are very fragile and do not withstand being under extreme pressure.

If you have a pet store nearby, you can probably buy a bubble from them. There are several different types available to you. You can get a bubble with a gunk guard or a guard that creates an area where the bubbles stay close to the surface of the water.

This will keep your fish from becoming acclimated to the bubbles and so prevent them from avoiding them in the future. If you have live rock in your tank, you can buy a bubble with a layer of bubble gel to help protect the rock against other bacteria and algae that may be floating around.

For those of you who do not have live rock, but you do have some sort of plastic or ceramic in your tank, you can get bubble guards which will do the same thing as the gel does. However, if you only have some plastic, a bubble will do a great job.

If you want to keep your fish happy, you should get a bubble. It is one of the best ways to keep your fish alive and also helps to keep your tank clean. So, if you want to make sure that your fish to get the best care possible, take the time to give them a Bubbler and enjoy the benefits of good healthy fish.

Is Your Betta Fish Filter Too Strong?

betta fish filter too strong

A betta fish filter too strong is a must.

A strong filter will keep all the air in the tank and out of the water, and this can be very beneficial to the fish. A strong filter also helps to avoid blockages. If you live with fish that enjoy gorging on plants, then try to use a filter that is too weak. I have seen people who have tried to mix water from two ponds and have a bad problem with blockages.

When you get a fish tank, you are making a huge mistake if you have a filter that is not strong enough.

It is very important to have strong filters, even if they cost a little bit more. Just keep in mind that you want to have good water and a high water flow rate.

This is very important because it helps the filter to pick up wastes and a lot of algae too. You should have a filter that is strong so that it is able to pick up a lot of the wastes. In fact, I think that a strong filter should be used throughout the tank.

The first filter that you should use is the sponge filter.

The sponge filter does a great job. It does not block any of the intake pipes and it is very simple to install.

Once you have a strong filter, you can install a nitrate remover. You will need to take care that this is added to the tank. However, if you use your own home aquarium filter then you can add the nitrate remover at the end of the feeding time and you will need to let it do its job.

Also, you can add an electro-push filter to this system if you have an electro-pneumatic pump.

Do Betta Fish Sleep? ( 11 Facts That You Need to Know)my betta is sleeping between my decors at the bottom

All fishes including Betta Fish sleep. They need to sleep to rejuvenate and restore energy which is need for the next day. Betta Fish in the wild are natural hunters during the day.

Their main diet consists of:

  • Mosquito larvae
  • Worms
  • Insects
  • Smaller Fish

In the tropics where there are abundant Betta Fish that thrives in the rice paddies, there are a lot of mosquitoes infested areas where it lays its eggs and produces in larva. The Betta Fish are actually a main part of the ecosystem that controls the population of the insects and mosquitoes.

mosquito larva

There are semi aquatic freshwater earthworms that are also abundant in the river systems and rice paddies in Thailand. These genus Glyphidrilus earthworms are essential to the organic rice farming in Thailand but of course, you need someone to control the population in case it gets out of hand.

Betta Fish will happily hunt for Zooplankton, Crustaceans and other water-bound insects as their main diet since these are also very common in the rice paddies of Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.

Of course if there is a smaller fish that is caught unaware by the Beatt Fish, it can be its meal for the day. Remember that the Betta Fish has extremely sharp teeth which can be compared to a shark, it is just that they are so small that when they bite our finger it does not affect us.

How Do Betta Fish Sleep?

Bette Fish sleeps at night since it is not a nocturnal fish. It mainly hunts during the day. The Betta Fish can sleep anywhere namely:

  • Resting on a leaf
  • Resitng on a Rock Surface
  • Resting inside a cave
  • Resting between live plants

sleeping on leaf

You might think that the Betta Fish is dead or lethargic but it is simply resting or sleeping on a leaf. Remember that the Betta Fish can partially be on the surface since it has a special breathing organ called Labyrinth which can breathe atmospheric air.

betta fish internal anatomy showing the Labyrinth

Betta Fish are territorial fishes that when it feels that it is comfortable it can be found everywhere resting. My Betta Fish is very comfortable caught sleeping on my live plants.

betta fish sleeping on plant

The best way on how to tell if your Betta Fish is sleeping is to look at his gills. He will be doing regular breathing on his gills and mouth. They do not have eyelids, that means they sleep with eyes open.

Slow Breathing

You will normally catch him motionless for a duration of time even if you put your finger on the surface especially at night. This will be evident if he just lay on one location. It is best not to disturb or flick your finger on the aquarium and respect his private moments which is crucial for rest and recovery.

I have to mention that when the Betta Fish is breathing it is slower than usual because when the Betta is sleeping it needs less energy so less oxygen is needed thus explaining the breathing.

Color Change?

Betta Fish will also have a slight color change when sleeping. This is completely normal since the Betta Fish has to be unnoticeable as a part of a camouflage so that if there a prey, the Betta Fish is not easily spotted.

You have to remember that the lighter color is just for the night when he is sleeping. When awake the full rich color returns. In case, if your Betta Fish color is still pale then he might be sick and you have to do the proper diagnose procedures.

Do Betta Fish Sleep on the bottom of the tank?

my betta fish favorite spot at the bottom of his tank to sleep

My Betta Fish is always sleeping at the bottom of tank. Other fish hobbyist notice that their Betta Fish may be sleeping near the top surface.

While others may have noticed that their betta fish sleeps in different places. Between the live plants, on top of a leaf, inside a cave.

Different Betta Fishes have different personalities. But there is one thing to know, if your Betta Fish is sleeping on the surface most of the time and then you introduced a water filter then suddenly the Betta Fish sleeps at the bottom tank.

It simply means that the water current is too strong for the Betta Fish to continue to sleep on its former favorite near the surface position.

There will also be another reason where the heater is located in your Betta Fish Tank. If there are areas where it is warmer, then the Betta Fish will naturally gear towards on sleeping near the area where it is warmer since they are a tropical fish.

Your Betta Fish in time will find a favorite place to sleep.

Do Betta Fish Sleep Upside Down?

It is not common for a Betta Fish upside down. This may a symptom that the Betta Fish is likely to be sick. If you Betta Fish is having problems on swimming up or down, it might be swimming upside down or on a side.

This will be a problem with the swim bladder. The bladder might be infected with bacteria or fungus. It might also be infected with Ick or White Spot. If there are White Spots on your Betta Fish then it those parasites that might have injured the swim bladder.

Follow the proper remedies especially regular water changes to make sure that your Betta Fish stay healthy all the time.

Do Betta Fish Sleep on their side?

Yes there are Betta Fish that sleeps on its side especially if you have a lot of large leaves inside your Betta Fish Tank. But if there are no comfortable surface to sleep with its side then it may again be a problem with the swim bladder.

If the Betta Fish has a swim bladder malfunction then he may be swimming on his side or upside down since he cannot balance.

If your Betta Fish always on its side then there may be several factors causing this awkward position:

  • Tank too small to navigate
  • Water is toxic
  • Water is too cold
  • Weak Immune System

The recommended Betta Fish Tank capacity must be at least 2.5 gallons or more. If you are trying to breed a male and a female betta fish then a 5 gallons will the minimum. If the betta fish tank is too small then there will be not enough space for your Betta Fish to swim and eventually water will be toxic because of waste.

If you do not do the regular water changes on a weekly basis then there will be poor water parameters. Be sure to maintain water quality by testing pH when adding water.

If there is no heater on your Betta Fish aquarium then the Betta Fish will likely get stressed and in the long run develop a weak immune system and get sick.

If your Betta Fish has a weak immune system then it may lead into illness which can cause problems with the swim bladder.

Do Betta Fish Sleep a lot? How Often Do Betta Fish Sleep?

I have mentioned that Betta Fish needs sleep in order to function properly. If you have a sleep deprivation then this will lead into illness.

You have to always turn off the light at night for the Betta Fish to go into resting state. Betta Fish sleeps at night and occasionally they do take some naps during the day.

The Betta Fish is very active during the day especially when you are playing or when it is feeding time!

They take a lot of naps. In nature they are very light sleepers because there might be danger at any given time, if there is a slight movement or noise they will react immediately.

It is imperative for you not to tap or flick on your Betta Fish Tank when it is nighttime. If you always tap all the time then they will easily stress out which may lead into illness.

How Many Hours Do Betta Fish Sleep?

Betta Fish in the wild are active hunters during the day. They need a lot of energy to jump, tackle and prey on insects that are top of the surface since they are carnivorous fishes. They are like small sharks in the rice fields. Good thing they remain small enough for us to make them pets.

They have extremely sharp teeth, if they grew as big as an Oscar or a Piranha then you will be in big trouble when taking care of them as pets.

Betta Fishes need a lot of sleep during the night, it will be around 8 to 12 hours. Since they are found in the tropical countries: Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam rice paddies they are super active during the day and needs to sleep at night.

It is when the mosquitoes lay their eggs at night and form into larva for the Betta Fish to benefit during the day when scouting for food.

Do Betta Fish Sleep with their eyes open?

Yes, Betta Fish do not have eyelids like us and sleep with their eyes open as most of the fishes do. They normally find a comfortable spot to stay and most times they stay near the surface provided with there is a leaf present.

Can Betta Fish sleep during the day? Do Betta Fish sleep with the light on?

Yes, Betta Fish do take some naps occasionally and need to take some breaks. Sometimes if they are bored and nothing much to do or eat they will take quick naps

Betta Fish in the wild need to hunt during the day and most of them active. If your Betta Fish which is kept in captivity is not used to hunting as their cousins the wild do then, he may be take short naps. Betta Fish in captivity are used to being fed, but they instinctively they are still active.

They are day fishes and not the nocturnal ones.

Do Betta Fish sleep in the dark?

Yes, Betta Fish need to sleep at night since they are not nocturnal fishes. Betta Fish need the much rest and recovery time to sleep especially when everything is dark and no activity.

It is important to shut off lights at night since they need to rest.

Do Betta Fish sleep near the surface? What are the sleeping positions?

Betta Fishes have different personalities just like humans and mammals. Not all Betta Fish are the same. Some may be very aggressive and some a bit docile.

During the Ancient Thailand when there are fighting bouts on Betta Fishes, some will be constant winners, this just means that there are different qualities on every Betta Fish.

There are Betta Fish that are just bred for fighting and some are Bred for competition and shows with elegant fins for display.

This alone will answer the question that Betta Fish may sleep at the bottom of the tank, on surface, on top of leaf, between the plants, on top of a smooth stone or under a small cave if you have a cave decor or depends on how you made the landscape on your valued Betta Fish tank.

What If Your Betta Is Sleeping all the time?

If your Betta Fish sleeps all the time during day and night then there might be several problems.

Sick?

Your Betta Fish might be sick. A normal Betta Fish during the day is very active and always curious looking for food to eat and hunt. You have to observe some symptoms on his body:

  • White spot
  • Swelling
  • Sores
  • Ulcers

Your Betta Fish might be invaded by the Ick, a parasite that latches to body and especially gills. This is normally caused by introduction of new member in the community and the parasite infects everyone in the tank.

If there is a swelling of the body then it means that you are feeding your Betta Fish too much. The best feeding is just once a day and you should practice at least 1 or 2 days without giving food once a week to clean his body from excessive food. If you are feeding him all the time then it will lead into constipation and ultimately indigestion and will cause illness.

If there are noticeable sores and ulcers on the body then your Betta Fish might have infected by bacteria or fungus. This happens all the time if you do not follow the regular 25% weekly water changes.

Old Age?

The normal captivity lifespan of a Betta Fish is around 2 to 4 years. If your Betta has been with you around 2 years already then it might be slower than usual.

It will spend more time in recuperating and resting. It would be better to feed him only once a day since Betta Fish metabolism will be slower during old age.

He requires a lot of resting and sleeping and it would be good not to disturb him.

Lazy?

As i have mentioned before that all Betta Fishes have different personalities. Some are born fighters, some are born hunters and some are just do not like to hunt as compared to their wild counterparts.

If you have conditioned your Betta Fish with regular feedings then he might not be as aggressive looking out and scouting his surroundings since everything is provided.

Betta Fish that are pampered and well taken care might lose some natural instincts as compared to the ones in the rice paddies that are constantly on the lookout on the surface to hunt and prey on insects.

Betta Tank Broken Light?

It would be wise to repair any damaged light on your aquarium so that the Betta Fish will know day and night. Or better yet if you are a very busy person, get a timer for your aquarium ight and program it to turn on and off on specified hours.

Small Tank?

small betta container in pet stores

If there is no room to swim around then your Betta Fish will naturally just stay in one place. Be sure to get him at least 2.5 or 5 gallons of Betta Fish Tank and live plants or decors where he can hide, rest and play.

Water Temperature Settings?

Betta Fish are tropical fish and if you do not have a heater in your tank then you are killing your Betta Fish slowly. Cold water will stress the fish and the long term effects is weak immune system which will lead to illness.

It would be wise to buy a thermometer so that during your weekly cleaning routine you can check if the heater is still working. The correct temperature settings would be ranging around: 78 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit

Betta Fish Behavior: Happy, Sad or Sick?

Betta Fish Behavior: Happy, Sad or Sick?

Betta Fish in small container

This is an interesting topic about the emotions of a Betta Fish. There are several signs that you know if your Betta Fish is happy. Let us delve and know how to tell Betta Fish behavior on several scenarios.

How Can I Tell if my Betta is happy?

brine shrimp

  • Make Bettas are happiest if he is left alone. If there is another Male Betta they will fight and get very aggressive. You can put a female betta for the purposes of breeding.
  • Bettas are also very happy when they are with some suitable tank mates but you must provide at least 10 gallons and above and with a lot of hiding places and live plants.
  • Bettas are very happy with the proper water parameters, so it is necessary to do 25% regular water changes weekly so that the 7.0 pH and water conditions are met.
  • A Happy Betta is vain, in fact if you place a mirror on one of the outside wall of the betta fish tank then the Betta will always enjoy and admire and staring all time on the mirror
  • The Betta is happy if the color of fins and body glows and always swimming around and showing it off.
  • If you put your finger on top of the tank, a happy betta will quickly go up to the surface and anxiously waiting for food.
  • Happy Bettas like to build bubble nest. The larger the nest the happier!
  • A Happy Betta will also be energetic and always be swimming around and observing the surroundings.

How do you know if your betta fish is sad?

Uninterested in Food

Betta will always be staying at the bottom and seems not to be interested in food or anything. Normal behavior of a Betta is that they are always hungry and have a voracious appetite.

If the Betta does not eat as usual as there will be some observations:

  • Uneaten food at the bottom
  • Picking at food but not eating
  • Loss of weight

Lethargic

If Betta does not swim up and down and being curious running up and about and just staying in one place then this is an obvious sign of depression. Betta will just move from one spot to another without the usual curiosity.

At times when your Betta is just resting on a plant or leaf for too long then this is another sign.

Does Not Pay Attention

We all know that when you point your finger near the surface of the fish tank, the Betta Fish normally eagerly dashes to your finger and even jumps! They are expecting food whenever you are near the surface.

When you are at one of the corner wall of the aquarium, if the Betta fish does not go near and observe you as there will be some issues regarding the behavior.

Not Colorful Betta

When he is depressed then the former vibrant colors will seemingly become dull looking. They call it “racing stripes” when the Betta Fish is under a lot of stress. Racing stripes is uneven color from gills to the body, horizontal in nature.

The “racing stripes” can be caused by stress. Sometimes the Betta is infected by bacteria or fungus hence the color is faded or have some blotch spots on the body and fins.

Aggression

We all know that Betta fish is always flaring out his gills. He momentarily flares his gills when you are feeding him food at the surface. If he is in a community tank, he always flares his gills all the time on tank mates.

If there are completely no sign of aggression as there is something wrong with your Betta Fish.

Betta Fish Behavior Before Death

Bad Water Parameters

Always monitor the water on your Betta Fish Tank to ensure that the pH level is around 6.8 to 7.2. If the pH level is too low then the water will be too acidic and Betta fish will burn their gills.

Always use the same water on your Betta Fish Tank. In the first place when the water parameters is bad then you are not doing the 25% regular water changes that is needed on a weekly basis.

It is evident that when the pH level is low there are a lot of uneaten food lying around and feces that are not cleaned on the gravel causing a spike on Ammonia levels.

It is a simple routine that you always have to remember.

Here is a video on how to check the water parameters on your aquarium tank.

Can you use tap water for Betta fish tank?

Low Water Temperature

The origin of Betta Fish is in the tropics. Temperature must be maintained between 78 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is too low as there will be several factors to your Betta Fish:

  • Stress
  • Illness
  • Shock

What can we do to solve this problem?

  • 5 Gallon to 20 Gallons Betta Fish Tank
  • Betta Fish Tank Heater
  • Thermometer

5 Gallons and larger fish tanks can evenly distribute the temperature and is not as sensitive to temperature changes. Smaller tank water can cool off very quick. Smaller volume if water are more sensitive to water changes either in temperature, pH levels, Ammonia, Nitrite or Nitrate.

Use the proper heater for the size of the Betta Fish Tank.

If you use a thermometer you will quickly know the temperature in an instant. Do not use the heater as a gauge because sometimes a measuring device will always be more accurate than just setting it on the heater.

Overfeeding

If you feed your Betta Fish too much then your fish will die eventually. Just feed the proper amounts, like once a day. Betta fish can survive without food for 14 days!

It would be good if your Betta Fish do not eat at least 1 day in a week. Siphon the gravel and do a 25% water change on a weekly basis to remove unwanted uneaten food that will make the water toxic due to Ammonia.

Betta Fish With Other Fish Behavior Traits

Everyone thinks that Betta Fish have to be solitary all the time. There is difference on the male and female betta fish.

Male Betta Fish will fight if there is another male in the tank. Female Betta fish can live with other females such as in a sorority tank.

Actually if you have a 10 or 20 gallons fish tank, a single male betta can cohabitant with other fish such as:

  • African Dwarf Frog
  • Cory Catfish
  • Snails
  • Skirt Tetras
  • Ember Tetras
  • Guppies
  • Platies
  • Rasboras

Betta Fish Staying At Top Of Tank

Betta Fish usually stays at the center of the tank. If you noticed that your Betta Fish is staying at the top of tank as there maybe several factors.

Betta tank has poor aeration

There is not enough dissolved oxygen in the fish tank then the Betta will always be more often gasping for air. This is very evident on the Betta Fish that are sold in pet stores housed in small containers.

The solution to this problem is to put them in a 2.5 gallons or even 5 gallons of aquarium with filtration system. It would be also best if you can install an aerator or air pump.

The Betta Fish can actually live in poor water conditions since they have this labyrinth organ. This special organ allows them to breathe gaseous oxygen air on the surface if the water conditions are poor.

Swim Bladder Problem

If your Betta Fish does not swim properly. If the Betta swims on one side as there is a bladder problem. The main cause for this is:

  • Overfeeding
  • Constipation

Overfeeding can cause the Betta Fish bloated and not swim properly. You can actually solve this problem by not feeding your Betta for a couple of days. By feeding your Betta Fish a boiled pea it will act as a laxative.

Constipation is the direct result of overfeeding. By feeding the Betta Fish pea it will remove the waste out of the system, issues of the bladder could be solved.

If feeding a pea or dieting could not solve the problem then it would be a bacterial or fungal infection.

Betta Fish Behavior In New Tank

Betta Fish does not need days to acclimate to a new tank. As soon as a couple of hours the Betta Fish can be already comfortable in its new house.

When you try to feed the Betta Fish on the surface of the tank the newly placed Betta will happily go to the surface and actively start eating.

Unlike other fished that tend to stay in a corner for a couple days.

Betta Fish Behavior After Water Change

I tried many times changing the 25% partial water changes on a weekly basis and there is no observe change in behavior on my Betta Fish. As long as your change the water gradually on your fish tank then it will not have any noticeable odd behavior on your Betta Fish.

If your Betta Fish tank is very small then a water change that is not the same temperature will lead to a shock on your betta fish and will cause stress which will eventually lead to illness.

Normally if there is an erratic behavior after a water change then it might be:

  • Water temperature
  • Water contains chlorine
  • Adding salt or other stuff in water

If there is an abrupt water temperature and doing water change then it will definitely affect the Betta Fish. All kinds of fishes are sensitive to fluctuations in temperature. Be sure when changing water or doing partial water changes, temperature has to be the same. A Thermometer is advisable.

Water directly coming from the tap is not aged and still with chlorine. Be sure to age it for at least 24 hours so that the chlorine will dissipate.

Adding salt on newly added water can directly impact the properties of the water especially if the water tank is small.

Baby Betta Fish Behavior

betta fry

When the fry are hatched. Most of the baby betta fish will likely swim a lot and most of them will be always near the surface or the water.

It is advisable to keep the water low so that they can be trained on using their unique organ: Labyrinths.

Betta Fish Courtship Behavior

When the male and female betta are near the joining together in spawning, their body color will be brighter than normal. They will start to stretch their fins which will begin on what you call: Mating Dance.

They will encircle themselves using noses pushing each other.

Do Betta Fish Need Water Conditioner?

Do Betta Fish Need Water Conditioner?

my betta fish tank

Not all water are the same. It is imperative that you have the proper water chemistry in order to make sure that you have a healthy Betta Fish in your tank.

Some important facts about the water chemistry before answer the questions what kind of water that is most suitable for your Betta Fish.

Water Chemistry

Water pH

The ideal pH for the Betta Fish is around 7.0 which is “Neutral”. Most tap water here in the US or Canada ranges between 6.5 to 7.5 which is safe for a Betta Fish. pH levels are a measure on the acidity and alkalinity of the water.

pH ranges from 0 which is very acidic and 14 which is alkaline. Fishes thrives around ph 7.0, but Betta Fishes can still survive if it is slightly acidic. You have to keep the pH level consistent to have a healthy Betta Fish by 25% regular water changes weekly adding fresh tap water.

You can also simply top up tap water when some the Betta Fish Tank water evaporates.

pH test strips maybe important if you have several Betta Fish tanks that you are maintaining. But of course water chemistry is more than just pH tests.

Good news is that your Betta Fish can adapt a wide pH range. It should be important to use the same water source which the Betta Fish is acclimated to it.

Ideal Water Parameters For Betta Fish

What are the ideal water parameters for a life sustaining Betta Fish?

Chlorine 0
pH 7 7.5 8.0 8.5
Nitrite 0 0.5 1.0
Nitrate 0 20 40 80
GH 30 60 120
KH 40 80 120 180
Ammonia 0 0.025

What is Nitrite?

Where do the Nitrate come from? It comes from Betta Fish waste, uneaten food and plants in the fish tank. When the Betta Fish releases ammonia waste, the bacteria will convert it into Nitrite which is dangerous. That’s why it is important to have an efficient filtration system in your Betta Tank to make sure that it breaks down into harmless components.

What is Nitrate?

This is not overly dangerous to your Betta Fish Tank. This is produced when the bacteria convert the Nitrite on the fish waste or uneaten food. It is great news if you have plants or algae which consumes Nitrate as food. If you do not have regular water changes in your aquarium then there will be an excessive Nitrate build up which may harm your Betta Fish in case your Betta Fish Tank do not have live plants.

What is GH?

It simply means it is water hardness. It is the measure of salts dissolved in your Betta Fish Tank. It is the measurements of magnesium and calcium in your Betta Fish tank. Some aquarists say that if there is not much GH then the water is soft. If there are too much GH then it is hard water. Good thing the table above shows that your Betta Fish can accept a wide range of GH from 30 to 120.

What is KH?

This is the measurement of carbonate and bicarbonate ions that acts as buffer in the Betta Fish Tank to maintain pH levels. Betta Fish tank levels that is the most suitable from 40 to 240 ranges.

What is Ammonia?

This is a very important water parameter that should always be monitored. If you feed the fish too much and left uneaten it will produce ammonia. If there is too much fish and plant waste then the ammonia levels will be too high and will be too toxic to the fish and may result into death.

If there are too much Ammonia then there will be several observations on your previous Betta Fish:

  • Loss of Appetite
  • Inflamed Gills
  • Always at the bottom of the tank
  • Lethargic
  • Inflammed Fins

A simple solution again is to have 25% consistent regular water changes. It is also important that you just feed the right amount that the Betta Fish can eat in 2 minutes to avoid uneaten food that may contribute to Ammonia. Too much Ammonia is dangerous and detrimental to your Betta Fish.

Boil Tap Water For Betta Fish?

Why Betta Fish Should Not be put in water that has been boiled and cooled?

You cannot use boiled tap water for your Betta Fish Tank. You may think that boiling water removes the all the harmful chemicals and also kill parasites and bacteria. The deadly Amoeba is sometimes found in contaminated tap water, lakes, rivers and swimming pools that are not chlorinated properly.

It is a good thing that the tap water here in Canada and USA is generally safe and without the nasty Amoeba and other harmful parasites and bacteria.

Boiling water will actually make toxic chemicals hard metals and chloramine more concentrated in the tap water since they do not evaporate. It is not advisable to use a boiled tap water for your Betta Fish.

How To Test Tap Water for Betta Fish?

Here is a very short video to see if the Tap Water is suitable for Betta Fish.

Can You use Tap water for Betta Fish?

tap water

Yes absolutely. The tap water is absolutely good for Betta Fish. The quick way to treat the tap water by using a water conditioner and you can use it right away.

The chemicals contained in regular tap water is safe for us to drink but it will kill your Betta Fish. Tap water is perfectly fine to be used on your Betta Fish once the chlorine, chloramines and other heavy metals are removed. Tap water contains minerals and variety of nutrients for Betta Fish.

Maintain the water temperature between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, since the Betta Fish are tropical. It would be also an essential for your Betta Fish Tank to have a water heater that can regulate the temperature.

my 2 years old aquarium pH color chart pH test kit pH test kit

Free Method on using aged water

On the other hand, the tap water is free and you just have to let it sit it for 24 hours.

Aged water chemistry is stabilized which can be used for Betta Fish Tank.

Another way is to put the tap water on a large bucket of water and just aerating the water with a powerhead or air pump on the bucket, this will dissolve the chlorine and other gases.

The water that came from the city municipal is pressurized and treated with chlorine and other chemicals.

Distilled Water For Betta Fish?

distilled water

You cannot use distilled water since it is has been striped off on all the chemicals, minerals and nutrients. Betta Fish cannot live without minerals and nutrients rich water.

If you use purified water or distilled water the Betta Fish may live initially but in the long run it will eventually die. The Betta Fish will be very dull looking and will not have the life sustaining energy that is needed to eat and grow.

If you think that pure water is clean and you add the proper minerals and nutrients, it is not worth your time and effort.

Distilled water is also too expensive and too acidic.

Adding minerals to Distilled water can also be a very good and excellent for a Betta Fish Tank. The distilled water is very clean without any impurities and harmful chemicals and buying a suitable vitamin and mineral supplement especially formulated for Betta Fish Tank.

Well Water For Betta Fish?

well water

If you live in the countryside or rural that do not have access to Municipal water then you might think that maybe the well water is safe? The well water is absolutely not suitable for your Betta Fish simply because the well water contains a lot of pesticides, fertilizers and higher concentrations of heavy metals such as iron and copper.

If there is a local aquarium store in your vicinity then bringing the water sample to test to verify that you can safely use the well water in your area to be used for Betta Fish Tank.

If there are no options to obtain tap water in your area then be sure to test the well water first and then treat it with a water conditioner to order to neutralize the chlorine and heavy metals.

if there is no aquarium pet store in your area then you may have to buy a water test kit to make sure that the well water is suitable.

Spring Water For Betta Fish?

spring water

This is the best option for Betta Fish Water Tank. The setback is that it is expensive in the long run and you just have to keep buying spring water to maintain your fish tank. Spring water is safe because it does not contain the chlorine which the tap water coming from the municipal city pipes.

You just have to make sure that the pH levels is within the acceptable range of: 7 to 8.5

Showing you the proper pH level on a Water Test Kit

Here is a short video on showing you the proper pH level on a water test kit which incidentally I got this on sale at a local pet store.

Different manufacturers of spring water available at your local store has varying levels of pH. So make sure that you just buy the same brand in case you opt for spring water.

Spring water contains the nutrients and minerals that can be able to sustain your Betta Fish. There are no need to add water conditioner if you are using the spring water.

You have to keep in mind that the temperature has to be consistent with the water in your Betta Fish Tank. It would be wise to keep the extra spring water in the same location with your Betta Fish Tank.

It would be great to initially set up the Betta Fish Tank and then just top up using free aged tap water.

Betta Fish Water Temperature

Maintaining your Betta Fish temperature in range of: 76 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit since the Betta Fish in the wild lives in tropical water temperature. It is best that you obtain a Betta Fish Tank water heater to maintain the proper range.

When you are adding the above mentioned water, you have to make sure that the temperature is the same with the Betta Fish Tank.

Drastic change in temperature will result into Betta shock.

Betta shock will happen if there is a sudden extreme water temperature changes.

In case if you want to change the water in your Betta Fish Tank then you have to do it gradually over time.

How to switch water in your Betta Fish Tank?

You can do it in a month when switching water.

EVERY WEEK:

1. Take out 25% Old water and add 25% New type of water

2. Take out 50% Old water and add 50% New type of water

3. Take out 75% Old water and add 25% New type of water

4. Change all the water to New type of water

Important point is to make sure that the water temperature of the new water must be the same with the old water. Be sure that the water source must be kept consistent because the pH level for a Spring water and the Tap water may be different.

For example:

  • Smart Water 6.97
  • Poland Spring 6.31
  • Penta Water 6.7
  • Nestle Pure Life Bottled water pH is 7.3
  • Vancouver, BC Canada tap water is 7.5
  • New York tap water is 7.2
  • Florida tap water is 6.0
  • Oregon tap water is 7.4 to 8.1
  • California tap water is 6.5

If the pH level is too high then adding too much water conditioner can burn your Betta Fish Fins. pH down is acidic which is very harmful for Betta Fish. So using Florida or California tap water is not suitable for Betta Fish.

Betta Fish Water Additives

Aquarium Salt
