There are several reasons why you might want to keep your guppies in a group, with another species, or even in a separate tank for breeding. Some fish prefer the company of their own species, while others enjoy the company of other, non-aggressive species. Guppies are not particularly emotional animals, but they do have a strong desire to breed.

Keeping guppies in a group

Guppies are sociable creatures and are best kept in groups of three or more. Keeping them in a group also ensures that they don’t become aggressive with one another. A recommended ratio for guppies in a group is two females to one male.

While guppies can live in solo environments, they are happier in a group. They stick together when they feel nervous or when it’s feeding time. They’re also active swimmers and will try to impress the females. Sometimes they’ll get into a fight and end up injured, or even die.
